Making the Screen Green: A Guide to Film Sustainability Standards

The film industry is undergoing a transformative shift towards sustainable practices. As filmmakers embrace their environmental responsibility, a set of standards and certifications is emerging to guide them. Green On Set is here to help you navigate these green guidelines!

One prominent standard is the BAFTA albert certification. Developed by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), albert offers a comprehensive framework for studios to measure and reduce their environmental impact. Studios that meet albert‘s criteria can obtain certification, demonstrating their commitment to sustainability throughout their operations.

albert also offers a toolkit for filmmakers to calculate their carbon footprint and see in real time what impact their production is having.

In other territories, organisations have chosen other types of carbon calculators to use for their CO2 estimates, as well as for their reporting: the EURECA calculator, used on a European level, SeCO2 and Carbon’ Clap (France) etc.

For production companies in North America, the Green Production Guide, a toolkit developed by the Producers’ Guild of America (PGA) and a major studios partner group, now known as the Sustainable Production Alliance (SPA), offers a list of green vendors, as well as tools and resources to help filmmakers be more sustainable.

These are just a few examples of the many standards and guides available. Here at Green On Set, we stay up-to-date on the latest industry benchmarks and can advise you on which standards best align with your specific project and goals.

Beyond Certification: A Holistic Approach

While certifications offer valuable recognition, Green On Set believes a holistic approach is key. We go beyond simply achieving a particular standard. We work with you to develop a tailored sustainability plan that minimizes your film’s environmental footprint throughout its lifecycle. This includes:

  • Green assessments to identify areas for improvement.
